Beloved Greenland Family,
This past week, I felt as though I had become a journalist for a documentary called "People Who Make Korea Shine." I was given the gift of meeting three remarkable individuals who have discovered their Korean identity here in America, and who are using that identity to bring about good in the world around them.
The first was Chef Edward Lee (이균), who placed second in the final round of Netflix's Culinary Class Wars. He shared that one day, while training in Southern cuisine in Kentucky, he came to a fresh realization that he was Korean. That discovery did not become a source of shame but of pride. And that pride opened up his own unique path — a path that bridges Korean cuisine and Southern cooking.
The other two were Jihye Han and her husband Yeonsoo Kim, who teach art at Phillips Exeter Academy. Jihye is an artist devoted to the dalhangari (moon jar), and Yeonsoo to the onggi (traditional Korean earthenware). Through these round vessels — the very ones we used to see tucked into the corners of our childhood courtyards — they are quietly sharing the spirit, soul, and sensibility of the Korean people at a school on the East Coast of America.
These three individuals had different professions, lived in different places, and were called to different stations in life. Yet they shared one thing in common: they were people who knew who they were. And with that identity, they were bringing light to the very places where they had been sent.
At the end of these encounters, I could not help but think of our Greenland Church. It was, after all, the very week we began preparing for the 2026 Korean Festival. God has poured out no small measure of gifts and spiritual depth upon the Korean church and upon Korean Christians. And He has sent us — those who have received those gifts — to this American soil. Greenland, too, is no accident. I was reminded of this once again.
If these three are illuminating Korea through food, onggi, and dalhangari, then what has been given to us, the Greenlanders? I found myself asking that question. We have the gospel. We have a deep spirituality of prayer and devotion, refined through generations of the Korean church. The Korean Festival is not merely a cultural event. It is the meeting place of our calling and our sending — the place where, as those who have been sent to this land, we share the beauty of Korean culture together with the values of the Kingdom of God.
Today, I invite you to read slowly the "Three Reasons We Hold the Korean Festival" below. May it be a day of meditation, a day of considering your own calling and sending before the Lord.
It is my prayer that each one of you, dear family, will participate even more deeply in the 2026 Korean Festival. I believe it will be a time when, together, we confirm our calling and our sending.
Today, as always, I bless and pray for each member of our Greenland family.
With love,
Pastor Gil-Pyo Lee
