<The Beauty of Deacon: Marketplace Missionary>
: The Ultimate Purpose for All Christians**
The United Methodist Church has a unique role known as Deacon. These individuals hold full-time jobs even after completing their theological studies (M.Div), living out their faith as missionaries in their professional workplaces. They serve as ministers or missionaries without relying financially on the church or denomination, following their calling in the world. In fact, this should be the goal for all Christians—not to live as Christians confined to the church, but to embody the true essence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ outside of the church. We should strive to be recognized as God’s people by those we meet daily, spreading the fragrance of Christ through our lives.
I had the pleasure of meeting an inspiring Deacon, Hatti Stolzfus at Greenland United Methodist Church NH. She shared that her ministry involves supporting the church and the pastor while maintaining her livelihood through her professional work. She expressed her commitment to actively support wherever possible. Truly, she is a dedicated and faithful servant of God. Hatti, you are a gift to Greenland UMC. Thank you for taking the time to fellowship with me! I am so encouraged and inspired by you. I look forward to collaborating with you for the work of Greenland UMC.
UMC에는 Deacon 이라는 제도가 있다. 자신의 직업을 Fulltime으로 가지고 있으면서 신학공부(M.Div)를 마치고, 자신의 일터를 선교지로 여기며 선교사로 살아가는 사람들이다. 경제적으로 교단에 의존하지 않고, 세상속에서 자신의 부르심을 따라 사역자로 혹은 선교사로 살아가는 것이다. 사실, 이렇게 사는 것이 모든 그리스도인들의 목표가 되어야 할 것이다. 교회라는 공간안에서만 그리스도인으로 사는 것이 아니라, 교회밖에서 <진짜 그리스도인>으로 살아내어 매일 매일 만나는 사람들이 나를 하나님의 사람으로 인식하여 그리스도의 향기를 품어내는 삶이 되어야 할 것이다.
그린랜드에서 이렇게 멋지고 지혜로운 Deacon Hatti를 만났다. 자신의 사역은 자신의 생계를 자신의 전문직으로 유지하며 교회와 담임목사를 support하는 거라고 설명한다. 필요한 일이 있으면 자신이 할 수 있는 범위에서 적극적으로 support하겠다고 말씀하신다. 정말 하나님앞에 헌신된 신실한 사역자이다. 그린랜드교회의 귀한 선물이다.
