Those Who Pursue Depth

Not long ago, I had the privilege of visiting the studio of artist Yeonsoo Kim. Living in America as a Korean artist, she does far more than simply introduce onggi — the traditional Korean earthenware — to those around her. Into each vessel, she quietly folds the long history and spirit of Korea, and through her work, that spirit flows slowly and gently into American soil. As a member of the Korean diaspora, she has walked through the long, weary seasons of immigrant life, and only through that journey has she come to articulate what it truly means to be Korean. Her testimony is one that every immigrant — and every one of our children navigating the borderlands of identity — desperately needs to hear.

The Grace of Loneliness, Solitude, and Disconnection

"Loneliness, solitude, and disconnection became the very ground on which I discovered who I truly am."

Her words landed softly but deeply on all of us who are quietly putting down roots in a foreign land. The wilderness, I was reminded again, is never a place of punishment. It is the sacred workshop where God shapes us, the river of grace in which He shows us our truest face. Just as an onggi vessel must pass through the searing fire of the kiln to become what it is meant to be, so too our souls are made deep only by walking through the fires of solitude.

The World Is More Than What the Eyes Can See

I had originally planned to visit alone, in quietness. But when I gently opened the door for anyone interested to join, more people came than I had expected — and before long, our quiet visit had become a small, unplanned onggi seminar. As we gazed at the vessels shaped by her hands and listened to the philosophy poured into each one, we found ourselves setting down the noise of daily life and entering, together, into a place of contemplation.

That a single handful of clay, a single earthen vessel, can hold an entire life — a person's story, faith, and history — left me in quiet awe. And once again, I was reminded: the world is far more than what the eyes can see.

Those who shape what cannot be seen, who listen for what cannot be heard, who walk faithfully and quietly toward depth — today I met one such artist. And I have a feeling this encounter will continue to echo within me for a long time to come.
