There are missionaries of every kind in this world. Church planters, seminary educators, orphanage workers, environmental advocates — the variety of mission work is truly beyond imagination. But among all of them, the ministry that demands the most from a person is children's ministry. Caring specifically for undocumented families and their children is a calling so demanding, so relentless, that most would agree it is nearly impossible without a very particular call from God. In fact, one of the clearest signs of this reality is that even within local churches, the children's and education departments are almost always the most understaffed.
And yet — Missionary Helen has given her life to exactly this. In the Dominican Republic, she devotes herself to caring for undocumented Haitian families and their children. These are children who cannot access formal education. Children who receive zero government assistance. Children whose homes are sometimes demolished, forcing them to pick up and move — again and again. There are even times when she has had to stand up and fight government authorities, asking for nothing more than for these families to be treated like ordinary human beings. All of this — this exhausting, demanding, never-ending work — she has done voluntarily, for 24 years.
Through her child sponsorship ministry, she ensures that not a single child goes hungry, that they receive a primary education, and that they have a path to public school. Her care goes far beyond meeting physical needs — she walks alongside each child, nurturing them in body and soul, in faith and in learning. And when children carry wounds from family separation or the trauma of unwanted displacement, she steps in as something far more than a missionary. She becomes a mother — a real one — offering healing, presence, and love.
Most of us, if we are honest, hope to one day "graduate" from the school of motherhood and find a little rest. But here is a woman who chose this role freely — and has poured her entire life into it. It is impossible not to be moved by that.
She has even gone so far as to adopt two children of her own — Thaicha and Cristina — children without parents, now with a home.
