A few months ago, my mom invited me to join a missionary trip to the Dominican Republic coordinated by Pastor Gil, other members of GUMC, and Missionary Helene Hwang. I immediately felt that this was an opportunity I could not say no to.
This missionary trip couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. A spiritual journey to deepen my relationship with God was exactly what I needed.
Speaking of time—if you didn’t know, our departure flight was delayed twice due to the weather. Our trip ended up leaving on Thursday, the day we were originally supposed to come back. But we soon realized how perfectly it all worked out. The trip went safely and smoothly, thanks to Pastor Gil and especially Ms. Soojin Stickney for her incredible and admirable work making all of our flights and hotel stays seamless. I truly don’t think this trip would have happened without her. And of course, it was also thanks to the many prayers from people here today and from others supporting us from afar.
So many things just lined up better once the trip was rescheduled. Aaron, who had been sick when we were originally supposed to leave, recovered in time for the new dates. We were able to hold a mini VBS with the children there—something more than what we could have originally done earlier in the week. We also got to celebrate the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day. And one of the most powerful moments was being part of the Haitian French Creole church service on Sunday. Watching Pastor Gil deliver a sermon with the congregation there was incredible. I felt such a deep sense of pride in him and in Greenland church.
All of this reminded me that God truly lined this up. He wanted us to go on those dates for a reason. I believe He knew it would benefit not only us, but hopefully also the men, women, and children we were able to serve and worship with.
I was also so impressed by the preparation that went into this trip. People near and far came together to donate school supplies, medicine, toys, and financial support. We had fundraising help from the gracious Yuri’s Desserts, and so many prayers from our church congregation, our family members, and our friends. All of that support truly helped make this trip as wonderful and seamless as it was. It was amazing to see how every single person played a role in this journey—even something as simple as a prayer became part of the work God was doing. Serving God through this Mission Trip was tremendously fulfilling.
Matthew 25:40
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
This journey was incredibly eye-opening. Some of the conditions we saw, especially in Santiago, were much more difficult than I had imagined. It’s humbling to witness that when you come from a place like the United States, where many of us live very privileged lives. So often we find ourselves wanting more—more things, more space, more comfort. Yet there are millions of people around the world simply hoping to make it through another day.
The biggest thing I learned on this trip was the importance of connection. Human connection feels so lost in today’s world. But during this trip, I saw how powerful it can be: friendly greetings, sharing stories, and loving our neighbors just as Jesus taught us to do. Sometimes connection is as simple as meeting someone new and realizing you now have another brother or sister to pray for.
I also loved reconnecting with the people on this trip. I’ve known most of these women my whole life, so it meant a lot to be surrounded and comforted by their presence. It was also wonderful getting to know others more deeply—meeting Geonwoo properly, seeing Aaron again as an almost adult since I really only knew him as a kid, and spending time with Olivia and getting to know her better as well.
I especially want to take a moment to thank my mom. She is the reason I have my faith. Even when I faltered, she always helped guide me back toward God. Without her, I wouldn’t have experienced this spiritual journey with God—not only in the Dominican Republic, but throughout my whole life. I pray that God will always bless her.
The truth is, I stopped regularly coming to church almost ten years ago. During my late teenage years and early adulthood, my relationship with God was admittedly weak and uncertain.
But even during that time, I always knew God had my back. I always felt that He was right behind me, or beside me; holding my hand and assuring me that He was always there.
James 4:8
“Come near to God and He will come near to you.”
This trip reminded me that God works in ways we don’t always understand at first. Even something like a delayed flight ended up being part of His perfect plan. It also reminded me that faith isn’t always about having a perfect relationship with God—it’s about continuing to seek Him, even when we stumble or drift away for a time. God never left me, and through this experience He gently called me closer again. I truly believe He brought me on this trip not only to serve others, but to grow my own faith as well. My hope now is to keep nurturing that relationship with Him, to love and connect with others the way Jesus taught us, and to carry what I learned on this journey into the rest of my life.
