Hi, I am Olivia Hwang and I will be reflecting on the mission trip to the Dominican Republic.
When Pastor Lee asked me to talk about the mission trip for today’s service, I was wondering why he asked me specifically. Why didn’t he ask someone else to talk about it? I didn’t think I had anything special to say. As I was reflecting on this mission trip, I realized something: I found one of my purposes in life. As a kid I always dreamt of becoming a music artist. Near the end of the trip, my friend EK Cho suggested I write a song for the kids in the Dominican Republic for next year’s mission trip. I quickly wrote it and showed it to some of the members of the mission trip. They liked it. I realized by writing this song I can help people preserve their faith in God. Now, I want to do this with my music that I create, which also includes themes of mental health along with faith. I want to inspire people to have faith and keep going. I want to help people who feel the same as me keep going in life, to find some reason to stay.
Not only did I find something to look forward to in life, I realized God prepared me for this mission trip and taught me a lot about faith. In high school I learned Spanish all four years. So I got to communicate with the kids and parents when doing the crafts. Most of the mission team did not know Spanish, so they weren’t prepared for communicating with the Dominicans. I also developed friendships with EK Cho and Myung Kim. It helped me enjoy the trip more by sharing experiences with them and people I already knew before the trip. So that is how God prepared me for this trip.
Something I learned about faith on this trip was to not worry because God always has a way. Kyunghee Lee told me that as we were flying back to America. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”. It reminds me to do everything for God. I saw this through our mission team which shared the love of God by playing with the kids and taking care of the mission team. I also saw this through people on the team giving me advice about my life. Even though unsolicited advice can be annoying at times, they showed me that people really do care for me and love me.
What does this mean for me? Putting what God prepared me with and what I learned about faith, I have some more hope for my future. I can achieve my dream while achieving what God wants me to do, to glorify Him and spread the message of the Gospel. I didn’t really have hope before the mission trip. I was suicidal before the trip because I believed I had no reasons to live. I thought I was living for others, not for myself. But, I can help people. I can find reasons to live. I can live for God, which is living for myself because God wants me to be healthy. Amen. I hope and pray that anyone who is similar to me, who cannot find reasons to live, finds reasons to live through glorifying God as I do.
If anyone in the audience thinks this is sort of sappy or melodramatic, I don’t blame you. Talking about how God changed your whole life can sound unrealistic and unbelievable. How could someone believe in a God they can’t even see, and how could that change their entire life?
I am talking to non-Christians here. Maybe you think, why am I even here, at church? Maybe you’re thinking, I am just living on a floating rock in space. I’m not saying I understand your mind and everything you’ve been through, and I don’t have to. I’m not trying to convince you to become a Christian. I am saying this because I would probably be way worse off if I didn’t start believing in God at 12 years old. If I didn’t commit to living my life as Christian glorifying God at 16. Maybe I would be dead by suicide, I don’t know. But, if alive, I would probably be so confused and depressed about my life if I didn’t have God as a constant. That is my point.
Now I’m talking to Christians who believe in God, but are unsure. Is it really worth it? And by the way my life is going right now, I believe yes, it’s worth all the suffering. Even if I don’t know exactly why I suffered. All the nights I cried to sleep, all the times I prayed to God why am I even alive, all the times I was so confused and couldn’t find an answer to my problems while reading the Bible. I don’t know why I suffer sometimes. But I have more faith because of suffering. Even through my hardest times I had at least a little bit of faith in God. And it was what kept me going.
So have some hope and faith. Even a little bit. Because according to the Bible, the faith of a mustard seed can move mountains. Even if you can’t see what God is doing behind the scenes, as if He’s not doing anything. But He is! If you can’t trust God, trust me.
You can have hope, and you can have a purpose in life. I pray that everyone who feels like they have no purpose or hope in life will find it. Amen. Thank you for listening.
