Living a life of faith means focusing more on nurturing and tending to the unseen inner person rather than being preoccupied with outward appearances. The Bible tells us that God does not look at appearances but examines the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7
"But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”
The Apostle Paul also speaks about how, though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
2 Corinthians 4:16
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."
The more we meet and get to know people, the more we begin to look beyond their outward appearance and focus on their inner being. Over time, we come to realize that a person's kindness, sincerity, and heart make them truly precious, even if those qualities are not immediately visible.
There may have been times in our lives when we felt the need to focus on our outward appearance. As followers of Christ, we also strive to reflect His fragrance and be a blessing to others, ensuring that our actions and demeanor do not cause others to stumble. However, what is even more important is that we cultivate the garden of our hearts, allowing our inner being—our spiritual self—to grow more beautiful each day.
As it is written in Ephesians, may we all strive to keep Christ dwelling in our hearts through faith. Let us deeply root our lives in God’s love, strengthening our foundation so that our life tree may grow deeper, wider, and taller. May we become trees that provide shade, healing, and restoration to those who are weary and in need of rest.
Let us continue tending to the garden of our hearts, making it a place of beauty, peace, and growth. 🌿✨
신앙생활을 한다는 것은 겉으로 보이는 사람보다 눈에 보이지 않는 속사람을 더 신경써서 정성스럽게 관리하는 삶이라고 할 수 있습니다. 하나님께서도 외모를 취하지 않으시고 속사람을 보신다고 말씀하셨습니다.
[사무엘상 16:7]
여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 하시더라
바울도 우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 속사람은 날로 새로워짐에 대하여 말하고 있습니다.
[고린도후서 4:16]
그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니 우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 우리의 속사람은 날로 새로워지도다
사람을 만나면 만날 수록 알아가면 알아갈수록 겉사람보단 속사람을 더 살피게 됩니다. 그래서 눈에는 보이지 않지만 마음씀씀이 이쁘면 그 사람이 귀하게 여기지 않을 수 없는 것을 경험하게 됩니다.
한 때에는 겉모습에 온 신경을 써야했던 때도 있었을 것입니다. 또한 그리스도의 향기로 축복의 통로로 쓰임받기 위해 사람의 눈에 나쁘게 보이지 않도록 신경을 써야할 때도 있습니다. 하지만, 더더욱 중요한 것은 우리안에 있는 마음의 정원을 잘 가꾸어 우리의 속사람 혹은 영의 사람이 더더욱 아름다와지는 삶을 살아갈 수 있기를 소망해봅니다.
에베소서 말씀처럼 우리 모두가 "믿음"으로 말미암아 "그리스도 예수"께서 내 마음에 오래 오래 계시도록 최선을 다하여 "하나님의 사랑"으로 우리 인생의 뿌리를 깊게 내리고, 인생의 터/기초가 단단해져서 우리의 인생나무가 더 깊어지고, 넓어지고, 높아져서 쉼과 치유와 회복이 필요한 이들에게 그늘을 제공할 수 있는 나무로 자라가면 좋겠습니다! 우리안에 있는 '마음의 정원'을 아름답게 가꿔갈 수 있기를 소망합니다~
