Growth and Maturity
"Growth and maturity" are desires that many Christians hold dear. Everyone longs to grow and mature, to become a better version of themselves. There is an innate yearning in the human heart for growth and maturity. However, one crucial truth that anyone seeking growth and maturity must understand is that the process is not easy. As the title of a song suggests, "We Mature as Much as We Hurt."
In order for us to grow, we must go through what is often called growing pains. Growth requires the breaking of our current state and the expansion into new territories. Just as a building must have its existing walls torn down in order to expand, so too must we experience the breaking of our current selves before we can become something greater.
Peter had toiled all night without catching any fish, leading him to believe that there were none in that sea. However, when Jesus told him, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch," Peter’s faith was stretched beyond his own experiences and certainties. In the same way, we experience true growth and maturity when we step beyond our personal convictions and experiences.
Through this 52-day journey of Lent, may this not be merely a time of enjoying our current state, but rather a season of being broken by the Word and shaped by the Word, so that we may experience true growth and maturity. May we walk with the Word and with God on this journey.
[Romans 12:2, NIV] Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Growth and Maturity
"성장과 성숙"은 많은 그리스도인들의 소망일 것이다. 누구나 자신이 성장하고 성숙하여 좀 더 나은 존재가 되고 싶기 때문일 것이다. 사람의 마음에는 성장과 성숙에 대한 욕구가 있다. 성장하고 성숙하고자 하는 사람이 반드시 알아야 할 것은 성장과 성숙은 쉬운 일은 아니라는 사실이다. 노래의 제목에도 있듯이 "아픈만큼 성숙해진다."
현재의 내가 성장하기 위해서는 소위 <성장통>이라는 것을 경험해야 한다. 성장을 위해서는 지금의 상태는 부서지고 새롭게 확장되는 영역이 있어야 성장과 성숙이 일어나기 때문이다. 건물을 확장하기 위해서는 현재의 벽을 부수고 새로운 벽을 세워야 하는 과정이 있듯이 성장과 성숙을 위해서는 현재의 내가 부서줘야 하는 아픔을 먼저 겪어야 한다. 그런후에야 더 큰 존재가 될 수 있기 때문이다.
베드로가 "밤이 새도록 수고하여" 잡은 고기가 없어서 그 바다에는 고기가 없다는 자신확신을 가질 수 있었지만, 예수님께서 '깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라'는 말씀을 의지하여 자신의 믿음이 확장될 수 있었다. 이처럼 자신의 경험과 확신의 영역을 넘어설 때에 성장과 성숙을 경험할 수 있다.
"말씀과 함께 하나님과 함께"하는 이 사순절동행을 통해 현재의 내 자신에 대한 만족을 즐기기만 하는 시간이 아니라, 말씀으로 부서지고, 말씀으로 빚어져서 성장과 성숙을 경험하는 52일이 되기를 간절히 소망한다.
[로마서 12:2] 너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라
