In the Old Testament, the "wilderness" was the "scene" where the Israelites were trained to become God's people. It was a place where, for 40 years, they walked with God in a setting that "is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
While today's educational environments have largely shifted online, we cannot learn without entering the "place of learning," and we cannot experience transformation, growth, or maturity without enduring failures, mistakes, and trials. The wilderness is a place we would prefer to avoid if possible, a place we wish to escape. However, without passing through this wilderness school, we may have to forfeit growth and maturity altogether.
As Deuteronomy 8:2 states, the wilderness was a place "to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands." According to Jeremiah 2:6, the wilderness was "a land of deserts and pits, a land of drought and deep darkness, a land that no one passes through, where no one dwells." It is a land we desperately wish to avoid. Yet we are reminded that without traversing this difficult terrain, we cannot deepen in growth or maturity.
[Deuteronomy 8:2] "Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands."
[Jeremiah 2:6] "They did not ask, 'Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and ravines, a land of drought and utter darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?'"
