Spiritual Discipline
Spiritual discipline can be described as training that transforms the principles of our lives—not according to our own ways but according to Jesus’. It is the process of changing our lives, which were once driven by human nature, habits, and inertia, into ones that follow the principles of God’s Word. Instead of pursuing the values of this world, we learn to seek the values of the Kingdom of God.
Most people do not like change; we all prefer to live according to what is familiar. However, if we live only by what is familiar, we inevitably experience stagnation, aging, and decay. Just as our bodies deteriorate without the continuous regeneration of new cells, we need constant nourishment, exercise, and renewal to remain vibrant and alive. In the same way, our spiritual lives must be continuously trained and renewed.
"[Philippians 1:6] Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
God’s people can be seen as those who are preparing to live in the Kingdom of God while still on this earth. If we live only by human ways and suddenly find ourselves in God’s Kingdom, it would feel foreign and uncomfortable. However, when we train ourselves in God’s Word here and now, we can already begin to enjoy the values of the Kingdom while still on earth. To live in God’s Kingdom means to live under His rule and to experience the joy of His reign.
"[Colossians 1:29] To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me."
This is why spiritual discipline—training in godliness through God’s Word—is essential in our lives. It is the process of abandoning "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life" and replacing them with the values of the Kingdom of God, making them the foundation of our worldview and life principles. Through spiritual discipline, may we experience the joy of God’s Kingdom even here on earth.
"[1 John 2:16-17] 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."
<경건훈련>
