🍁 Autumn Journey #19 — Divine Encounter
Throughout life, we experience many kinds of encounters. Some lift our spirits, while others weigh us down. Some bring laughter; others leave us in tears. Some move our hearts deeply; others leave them cold. Yet among all these encounters, there is one that we need most — a holy encounter with God.
It is the kind of meeting where nothing can be hidden — where we are laid bare before God, able to see ourselves as we truly are. It is an encounter where we see the depths of our inner being, our spiritual self. With no pretense or mask, we stand as we are before God — and realize that He still loves us completely and unconditionally.
Moses met God before the burning bush that was not consumed (Exodus 3).
“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” (Exodus 3:5)
Jacob met God by the Jabbok River and wrestled through the night until his name was changed (Genesis 32).
“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” (Genesis 32:28)
Zacchaeus met Jesus, who sought him out while he was up in the sycamore tree, and his life was completely renewed (Luke 19).
“Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:9–10)
Saul met the risen Lord on the road to Damascus, and his life direction was radically transformed (Acts 9).
“As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’” (Acts 9:3–4)
The two disciples walking toward Emmaus met the resurrected Jesus, who walked with them and restored their hope (Luke 24).
“Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” (Luke 24:31–32)
And Nicodemus, who came to Jesus quietly at night, encountered the mystery of new birth through their conversation (John 3).
“Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.” (John 3:5)
All these encounters were not coincidences — they were moments when God came to meet humanity. Through these divine meetings, lives were changed, directions were altered, and new beginnings were born. They remind us that even today, our lives too can be transformed through a genuine encounter with God.
Our lives are shaped by the people we meet. Yet more important than whom we meet is what we see through those encounters — and which direction we take afterward. As many say, in life “direction is more important than speed.” But for the people of God, there is something even greater than direction: It is the meaning and value we leave behind.
If the traces of our lives — in the hearts of those we meet — awaken the hope and beauty of God’s Kingdom, then we have lived the highest kind of life a child of God can live.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14–16)
May each of us in the Greenlanders community experience deeper encounters with God this autumn — so that the values of His Kingdom may fill our hearts, and through every meeting and conversation, we may share the heart of God we have come to know.
