🍁 Autumn Journey #17 — “From Chronos to Kairos”
Hello, Autumn Journey family~ Did you sleep well last night?
This coming Saturday night, we’ll be given a small but meaningful gift — one extra hour! As Daylight Saving Time ends, we gain an extra hour of rest. How would you like to use that time? Would you simply sleep in a little longer, or do something you’ve been wanting to do?
I haven’t quite decided yet, but since it’s Saturday night, I’ll probably end up spending that hour preparing my sermon.
"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
The Bible reminds us:
“Make the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:16)
In this verse, the word “time” comes from the Greek kairos, while “chronos” refers to regular time. Chronos is the ordinary flow of time — minutes, hours, days, weeks — time that simply passes. But Kairos is different: it means a special moment, a divine opportunity, a time filled with God’s grace and meaning.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
The phrase “make the most of” goes deeper than just “use your time wisely.” In Greek, it means “to redeem, to rescue, to seize.” It’s the same word used when Scripture says that Jesus redeemed us from sin. So when the Bible says, “Make the most of your time,” it’s not merely saying, “Don’t waste time,” but rather, “Rescue your time from meaninglessness; transform Chronos into Kairos.”
“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.” (Colossians 4:5)
Each day God gives us is not meant to be simply another passing moment. Within each day lies a chance to discover His will, to experience His presence, and to live with renewed meaning and gratitude.
"Now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
This Saturday night, as that extra hour comes to you like a small gift, may it not just be another Chronos hour— but a Kairos moment, filled with God’s presence and grace. May that hour remain in your memory as a moment of divine encounter and lasting joy.
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)
Today’s Reflection
- What is one Kairos moment God has given you recently?
- How am I redeeming my Chronos time each day, transforming it into time that belongs to God?
