🍁 Autumn Journey #16 – “As a Man Speaks with His Friend”
Hello, dear Autumn Journey family! 🍂
Yes—Week 4 of our Autumn Journey has begun!
Whether the past three weeks have been successful or somewhat disappointing, let’s leave them behind and begin this new week with fresh strength, new breath, and renewed hearts—walking with the Word and walking with the Lord. I pray and hope that this week will be filled with new grace and deeper encounters with God.
Now that we’ve reached Week 4, I’ve started hearing stories from many of you who are journeying together through these Autumn Journey Letters. It’s truly heartwarming to know that we are walking side by side. The phrase “Journey Together” not only refers to these letters but also to the stories unfolding within our hearts.
As I mentioned on Sunday, what we should pay attention to in our life of faith are the things that happen inside—within our hearts and souls: the stirrings, the transformations, and the quiet shifts that come as we meditate on God’s Word. These are the inner stories that arise because of His Word—changes in how we think about God, about others, and about the events of our lives.
In Exodus 33, we find a beautiful scene where “the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”
“The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.” (Exodus 33:11)
To speak face to face with someone as a friend means to open one’s heart fully and share honestly what lies within. When was the last time you truly looked into someone’s eyes, paid attention to their expressions, and listened with full focus? Or when was the last time someone did that for you? If you imagine having such a conversation, how would that make you feel? Perhaps there would be a deep sense of joy—something beyond words, a warmth that touches the heart just by imagining it.
That is the kind of scene we see in Exodus 33—God and Moses in a deep, intimate conversation, face to face. This passage shows us that God longs to speak with us in the same way—with warmth, closeness, and genuine friendship. We often think of God as distant, holy, and untouchable, but He desires to meet us personally and converse with us as a friend.
In John 15, Jesus describes His relationship with the disciples as a friendship.
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:12–15)
As Jesus said, friendship means having nothing hidden—being able to share everything openly. God and Jesus both desire this kind of relationship with us: honest, open, heart-to-heart friendship.
May we also grow in such friendships—with God and with one another—especially within our Greenland family, where we can freely share even the deepest parts of our hearts. May our relationships become ever more sacred, beautiful, and full of grace.
