Lenten Walking Together. Day 22. "The Word and Prayer"

The Word and Prayer are so fundamental to our spiritual life and training that mentioning them twice might sound like nagging. They are like two sides of the same coin—a relationship where neither can be complete without the other. If we pray without the Word, we lose direction; if we read the Word without prayer, its vitality disappears.

[Matthew 4:4, NIV] Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Through the Word, we learn God's will and promises. Through prayer, we feel and understand the heart of God contained within His Word. Prayer is the channel that allows our souls to reach the deep streams of the Word.

To draw living water from a deep , one needs a . No matter how deep and clear the well water is, without a bucket to draw it up, we cannot quench our thirst. Prayer is that bucket, drawing life-giving water from the deep well of the Word to satisfy our spiritual thirst.

[John 4:14, NIV] but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The Word, as the of truth, possesses remarkable power. This sword can both give life and, if misused, cause wounds. That's why we need prayer, like a . Prayer safely stores the sword of the Word and allows us to draw it wisely when needed. Within prayer, the Word becomes sharper and gains the ability to pierce precisely where needed in our lives.

[Hebrews 4:12-13, NIV]
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Our souls are like gardens tended by God. When seeds of the Word are sown in this garden, the water and nutrients of prayer help those seeds grow. Without prayer falling like gentle rain, the seeds of the Word cannot sprout or bear fruit.

In daily prayer, the Word gains vitality, and through the Word, prayer finds direction. When these two harmonize, our spiritual journey becomes richer and deeper, and our relationship with God grows more intimate. May today's journey of faith soar toward heaven on the two wings of the Word and prayer.

[1 Timothy 4:4-5, NIV]
4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
5 because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.
