02DR Mission Diary #02

We Have Arrived!

3:35 PM — Arrived at Puerto Plata Airport

After sharing stories and testimonies on the plane, our team stepped onto Dominican soil with faces full of excitement and joy.

A new land. A new calling.

Collecting big donation luggages, clearing immigration, distributing and scanning E-Tickets — we proudly showed our "first-timer" colors every step of the way. 😄

Outside the airport, it was warm — like stepping into a steam room — but honestly, compared to Singapore (which I remember as standing inside the sun), this felt almost refreshing. Almost. 🌴

Meeting Missionary Helen Hwang — In Person!

We finally met the legendary Missionary Helen Hwang!

At 18, God placed a love for children in her heart. Since 2002 — for 24 years — she has followed that one calling across Canada, Africa, Haiti, and now the Dominican Republic. One heart. One direction. One faithful "yes."

In the DR, she has become a mother to Haitian children living without legal status — nurturing them physically, emotionally, educationally, and spiritually. Where electricity flickers and internet disappears, she simply lives on — fully local, fully present, fully surrendered.

Standing with her, I found myself quietly asking: Could I live this way? In a world where power and connectivity have become more valuable than currency, her life is a sermon in itself. Meeting someone like her is not just inspiration — it is mission. Her life is God's message.

"And God Saw That It Was Very Good" — Genesis 1:31

After waking at 3 AM, flying across the ocean, hauling ten-plus pieces of luggage through customs, checking in, and sharing dinner — our team sat down and joyfully prepared gift bags for 150 children and three Mini-VBS sessions.

Watching them serve with such quiet, willing joy, something rose in my heart — warmth, fullness, holy delight.

I wonder if this is a glimpse of what God felt after creation, when He looked at all He had made and said with deep satisfaction:

"It was very good."

That is what this team is. And God sees it.
