CHICHIGUA, MONTELLANO, PANCHO MATEO
JOY FOUNDATION serves the Haitian people living in the Dominican Republic. For many years, a large number of Haitians have been crossing into the Dominican Republic illegally. After the massive earthquake in Haiti in 2010, even more people fled their homeland, and today, due to political instability, many more continue to seek refuge across the border.
The illegal migration of Haitians to the Dominican Republic is a desperate choice for survival. The root causes lie in Haiti’s extreme poverty and instability. The island of Hispaniola is shared by two nations with different colonial histories and ethnic backgrounds: Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haiti was once a French colony, and most of its people are of African descent, while the Dominican Republic was a Spanish colony with a largely mixed-race population. The languages also differ—Haitians speak French and Creole, while Dominicans speak Spanish. However, the biggest difference lies in the quality of life and national stability.
The Reality of HaitiEconomic poverty: With a per capita GDP of about $761, Haiti has the lowest income level in the Western Hemisphere.
Political instability: The nation suffers from the aftermath of the president’s assassination, the absence of a functioning government, and rampant gang violence.
Lack of social infrastructure: Education, healthcare, security, and employment systems are severely underdeveloped.
Natural disasters: Repeated earthquakes and hurricanes have made national recovery extremely difficult.
A relatively stable economy: Construction, agriculture, and tourism are well developed, and the country relies heavily on Haitian labor.
Rising illegal immigration: As Haiti’s crisis worsens, the number of undocumented migrants entering the Dominican Republic continues to increase.
Strict government measures: Recently, the Dominican government deported or repatriated over 11,000 Haitians in just one week. Human rights concerns: Discrimination, persecution, and lack of legal status have deepened the humanitarian crisis for Haitians living there.
Why Do Haitians Come to the Dominican Republic? The phrase “to make a living” sounds simple, but behind it lies a desperate struggle for survival. Life in Haiti is unsafe and uncertain, while the Dominican Republic offers at least a chance to find work and support one’s family.
Because the two countries share a land border, crossing over is relatively easy. However, once they cross, many live as undocumented migrants, working for extremely low wages without legal protection and often facing discrimination.
This issue is not merely a matter of border control—it reflects the deep structural imbalance between the two nations and the lack of international support, resulting in a complex humanitarian crisis.
The Mission of JOY FOUNDATIONJOY FOUNDATION is a Christian mission organization serving Haitian immigrants, their children, and the local Dominican community.
We seek to live out the gospel and love of Christ, breaking down barriers of nationality, language, and culture—helping everyone recognize that we are one family in God. Through diverse ministries, we embrace and walk together in unity.
1. JOY PRESCHOOL: Multicultural Early Childhood Education
A place of love and learning where Haitian and Dominican children study God’s Word together and learn how to live in harmony.
Haitian and Dominican teachers work side by side, helping children grow up understanding and sharing with one another, planting hope for a future of peaceful coexistence.
2. YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS: Dreams and Challenges for the Future
Many Haitian youth lose their dreams due to their undocumented status. We share the gospel with them and provide educational programs in English, Taekwondo, music, and more—helping them regain confidence and discover their God-given talents.
Above all, we walk with them in prayer and love so that they may grow as true Christian leaders.
3. CHILD Camp; YOUTH SPONSORSHIP
Through sponsorship, children receive support for tuition, school supplies, medicine, and food.
Youth participants are supported to attend English classes, and some now serve with us as preschool assistants and interpreters.
4. Local Church Camp; Village Ministries
In villages such as Chichigua, Montellano, and Pancho Mateo, we partner with local churches to share the gospel and God’s love.
We worship and pray together, visit homes to listen and pray for families, and teach children—often growing up in love-deprived environments—about care, compassion, and sharing, planting seeds of transformation in their hearts.
5. Santiago Mission School for Haitian Refugee Children
In the Dominican Republic, many children of Haitian origin lack legal IDs and therefore cannot attend public school. Most live in extreme poverty, often surviving on one meal a day, without access to school supplies, clothing, or hygiene products.
Many also lack parental love and emotional care. We began a small school ministry to reach these children—bringing them hope, education, and the love of God. It is our mission to show them that they are precious and not forgotten.
6. JOY Mission Center Construction
What began as a small seed in one person’s heart has now grown into the purchase of land and the ongoing fundraising for a mission center. JOY FOUNDATION is preparing a sustainable, structured ministry space for Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic.
The center will serve as a home for preschool, youth, and young adult programs—especially as a safe and warm space for young people.
It will be a place where they can laugh, learn, pray, and feel that their lives truly m
