๐Ÿ Autumn Journey #33 โ€œDeep Cleaningโ€

One of the moments that impressed me most after coming to Greenland Church was our Church Deep Cleaning Day. I met young adults I had never seen on a regular Sunday. In fact, there were some I met for the very first timeโ€”not during worship, but on the day we cleaned the church. Normally, young adults disappear when itโ€™s cleaning day. But in Greenland, the exact opposite happened. The memory remains vivid because it was genuinely shockingโ€”in a good way.

Two thoughts came to my heart that day. First, โ€œThese are true Greenland family members who see this church as their own.โ€ No one shows up for deep cleaning unless they truly feel, โ€œThis is my church.โ€

Second, โ€œThey must genuinely love God.โ€ Even if we feel like family, we still donโ€™t show up to clean Godโ€™s house unless there is a reverent, honoring love for the Lord. The fact that they came spoke volumes about their hearts.

As I look back, I still remember each person wiping corners of the churchโ€”no instructions needed. Everyone simply walked around, found a spot, and cleaned it with care. I remember the men outside trimming weeds and clearing hidden corners around the garden. These are scenes you can only witness in a church loved deeply over a long time.

Deep cleaning means stopping everything else and giving ourselves fully to the work of cleaning. And โ€œdeepโ€ cleaning means dealing with what we usually leave untouchedโ€”dust in hidden corners, dirt behind furniture, things we didnโ€™t know had piled up. Itโ€™s inconvenient, tiring, and sometimes unpleasant. Thatโ€™s why deep cleaning requires intention, a decisive heart, and a willingness to face what we normally overlook.

Recently, I realized that meditation is very much like deep cleaning of the soul. Meditation begins simply with reading Godโ€™s Word. But when we give Godโ€™s Word a little more timeโ€”when we face it with honestyโ€”our inner person becomes visible. Hidden corners of the heart emerge. Things we avoided, ignored, or covered up rise to the surface. And as we let the Spirit cleanse what is uncovered, our souls become clear again, and eventually holy before the Lord.

My hope is that this 2025 Autumn Journey becomes a season of soul-deep-cleaning for all Greenlandersโ€”a time when God gently reveals what is hidden and restores purity within us.

โ€œFor God, who said, โ€˜Let light shine out of darkness,โ€™ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of Godโ€™s glory displayed in the face of Christ.โ€ โ€” 2 Corinthians 4:6

โ€œThe Lord within her is righteous; He does no wrong. Morning by morning He dispenses His justice, and every new day He does not fail, yet the unrighteous know no shame.โ€ โ€” Zephaniah 3:5

โ€œDo not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them. For everything in the worldโ€”the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of lifeโ€”comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.โ€ โ€” 1 John 2:15โ€“17

Walking together through the autumn of 2025,

Rev. Gil Lee
