π Autumn Journey #32 βLast Wordsβ
A last word is the most precious message someone leaves before deathβ a final expression of what mattered most, what filled their thoughts each day, and what they came to treasure above all things by the end of their life.
One of the main reasons I began writing seriously during ministry is connected to this idea of last words.
When I was in my third year of seminary, a close friend of mine lost his father. His father had served as a pastor, yet when my friend looked back, he realized there were no recordings, no written reflections, no sermons, and no personal writings that captured his fatherβs heart. There was nothing that allowed him to remember what his father had cherished, believed, or thought deeply about.
From that moment, my friend decided he would not leave the same emptiness to his children. He began recording all his sermons, writing down meaningful moments, and capturing his thoughts through photos and journaling. Every few years, he compiles them into a bookβso that if God calls him home unexpectedly, his children will know how their father lived, what he valued, and how he walked with God.
When I heard this story, something awakened in me:
βI also need to leave a record of what I think, how I feel, and how I attempt to live each day.β
From that moment, each day became more precious. And that is how my βDaily Reflectionβ beganβwith intention and commitment.
Daily Reflection is my way of writing down the most valuable spiritual insight God gives me today. It is the practice of recording the most important truth, the clearest conviction, the deepest gratitude of this very day. In other words, it is my daily last word. Because today is here only once, and at sunset, today is complete.
Joshuaβs Last Words
1. Obey the Word fully
βBe very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.β (Joshua 23:6)
2. Love the LORD wholeheartedly
βSo be very careful to love the LORD your God.β (Joshua 23:11)
3. Serve the LORD with sincerity and truth
βNow fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD only.β (Joshua 24:14)
