π Autumn Journey #28 β The Compass
These days, we rarely use an actual compass, but Iβd like to talk about it today.
A compass is a helpful tool when we lose our sense of direction. Whether hiking up a mountain or sailing across the sea, a compass helps us find our way when we are uncertain. The red needle always points north. From that, we know east is to the right, west is to the left, and south is behind us. We then place the compass on the map and align ourselves to move in the correct direction. Yet, as we journey on, we must periodically check the compass again β because we can easily drift off course. For long journeys, we keep the compass visible, so we can reach our destination safely.
In the same way, Godβs Word is the compass for our lives. The road we walk on earth is a path no one has ever walked before. No one can go ahead of us, report back, or walk it in our place. It is a completely new path that God gives to each of us β personally, uniquely, and daily.
Because it is new, making decisions along this path is often difficult. In those moments, we must discern Godβs will through the compass of His Word. Yet too often, our choices are driven by our own thoughts, experiences, and desires β by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The prophet Isaiah described this human tendency so clearly:
βWe all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.β β Isaiah 53:6
Like lost sheep, we each go our own way. That is why God sent Jesus Christ, who became the way, the truth, and the life. When we trust Him β the One who opens new paths and new seasons β we can walk in the true direction. We must listen carefully to His voice, read and meditate on His Word, and pray for His guidance.
Even when you cannot clearly see the path, do not lose heart. Abraham, the father of faith, obeyed Godβs call and set out without knowing where he was going. He trusted and walked by faith, and God was glorified through his obedience.
βBy faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.β β Hebrews 11:8
As we journey forward, we must, like travelers, keep checking our direction β because itβs easy to wander toward where we want to go instead of where God leads. Keep His Word visible, near your eyes and heart, so that you may walk each day without losing your direction.
May today be a day when you walk by faith, with your eyes fixed on the true North β Jesus Christ.
