Autumn Journey - Day 27.

Yeah!

🍁 Autumn Journey #27 – God and Me (Long Post Alert)

Yesterday, I had two opportunities to share about our Autumn Journey reflection. Both conversations were about a “hammer and a nail.” Some were surprised that the very first words that came to mind the moment I opened my eyes were “hammer and nail”, and others shared that the “hammer and nail” imagery gave them spiritual insight about their own relationship with God. Yeah! I believe many more will share as well. I hope you will send me your stories and writings so we can make this journey even richer.

As someone who writes, this kind of response is thrilling! When someone responds to my heart, and when it leads us to share about our relationship with God, it brings so much joy. My hope is that our Greenlanders will experience this joy of sharing, this joy of being a joy to others, and this joy that springs from each other.

Why? Because this is the joy God feels when He looks at His people. And He wants His people to live in that joy—

the joy of sharing, the joy of serving, the joy of caring, the joy of becoming more like Jesus— this is the joy of those who build God’s people.

This is the joy that made the Samaritan woman leave her water jar behind and run into the town to tell others about Jesus.

“Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?’” (John 4:28–29)

Today’s introduction is long because I’m still excited about yesterday’s joy. 😊 When joy overflows, words overflow too. It can be a little tiring for the listener, but this is one of those “holy inconveniences” of those who believe in God. Maybe now I can understand what John meant when he said that if everything Jesus did were recorded one by one, the world wouldn’t have room for the books.

“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25)

But there is a reason I am being lengthy today. Because there are many Christians in our time who live out their faith without joy. And in this context, we must not lose sight of one essential truth: our relationship with God.

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15:4)

Many see faith as religious activity, charity, or volunteering. So when someone donates, serves, or volunteers, we often assume they are living a faithful life. Of course, these are good and holy fruits.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” (Galatians 5:22–24)

However, we must examine the source of the fruit. From what spiritual nourishment did it grow? If a behavior is a “fruit,” what was the heart and motivation that gave birth to it?

The most beautiful and holy fruit comes from our relationship with God— when we do things because of God, when we act from the insight, conviction, and love born in fellowship with Him. Such a heart will feed our thoughts, actions, and relationships with holy nourishment. What motivates us determines the depth and quality of our lives. And through this, we become true disciples of Jesus.

“This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” (John 15:8)

We trust that the One who began a good work in us will complete it through us.

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6)

Walking together through the autumn of 2025,

Rev. Gil Lee
