Day 9.

Day 9. What Makes God Smile

"But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord." — Genesis 6:8
"This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God." — Genesis 6:9
"After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'" — Acts 13:22

Reflecting on Noah's life, I find myself asking: what does it actually look like to live in a way that pleases God? In Noah's day, God must have looked out across the world and found very little to rejoice over. And yet — something about the way Noah carried his heart caught God's attention and moved Him.

No child perfectly satisfies their parents. No employee fully delights their employer. And yet, there are moments — when a child or a colleague acts in a way that is unexpectedly thoughtful — when something warm and tender rises up within us. Those are usually the moments when they understood us a little more deeply than we expected, when they noticed something we never even said out loud.

To attend carefully to another person's heart — to read it with a little more depth, a little more sensitivity — that, I've come to realize, is what brings a smile to someone's face.
I find myself imagining: if we were to understand God's heart even just a little more deeply in the small things of everyday life — might He smile just a little more?
