Day 20.
Day 20. Restoring Broken Relationships*
There are many things in life that need restoring — health, daily rhythms, spirituality, physical strength, mental sharpness, spiritual vitality. The list goes on. But among all of these, the one that deserves the most weight in our life of faith is relationship. The two great axes of relationship are vertical — our relationship with God — and horizontal — our relationships with one another. The vertical I maintain, in my own way, through Scripture, prayer, worship, and praise. But the one that requires genuine, deliberate effort is the horizontal: relationship with people.
The more I reflect on relationships, the more I see them as living, breathing organisms. They shift from moment to moment — one word, one expression, one attitude can change the entire texture of a relationship between two people. Is there anything quite as sensitive as this?
Paul goes so far as to suggest that the ability to live at peace with others is a mark of spiritual maturity — and I find myself agreeing with him more and more. Because I have seen it too often: people who appear to be doing well in their faith, who are active in church ministry, and yet who struggle deeply in their relationships with others — who do not even seem to value those relationships. Ministry without relationship is not the fullness of what God calls us to.
Building new relationships matters, of course — but I am becoming increasingly convinced that deepening the relationships already around us*, and experiencing the growth of those existing connections, is every bit as much a marker of spiritual maturity. My hope for today is that it would be a day of relationships growing deeper, relationships ripening — relationships becoming more fully what they were always meant to be.
