๐Ÿ Autumn Journey #26 โ€œThe Hammer and the Nailโ€

This morning, the very moment I opened my eyes, a simple image entered my mind: a hammer and a nail. It probably came from our Coram Deo sharing last week. We talked brieflyโ€”less than a minuteโ€”about spiritual insight in everyday life. Yet the moment I woke up today, that small idea was waiting for me, as if it had been standing by all night.

Just as Scripture describes God and us as the potter and the clay, this image came to my heart:

โ€œYet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.โ€ โ€“ Isaiah 64:8

In my imagination, the Holy Spirit was holding a hammer and driving my lifeโ€”like a nailโ€”into the place He desires. It would be nice if one clean strike drove the nail straight in, but my heart is stubborn. So He strikes again, and again, shaping, correcting, aligning me.

My worry is not the pain of being struck. My worry is bending in the processโ€”breaking, resisting, or refusing His hand. If a nail bends, the carpenter has to start over. That means more hammering. More shaping. More waiting.

But then I realized something encouraging: At least I am not lying forgotten on the ground, not knowing where I belong. If God is still hammering, it means He is still working, still placing, still using.

Scripture reminds us:

โ€œThe Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son.โ€ โ€œโ€ฆIf you are not disciplinedโ€ฆ then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.โ€ โ€“ Hebrews 12:6โ€“8

โ€œโ€ฆWe rejoice in our sufferings, because suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character; and character, hope.โ€ โ€“ Romans 5:3โ€“4

So I want to invite you to try something this week:

Just as we see ourselves as clay in the Potterโ€™s hands, what if we discovered other images in everyday life that reveal our relationship with God?

You see these things every dayโ€”in your room, your kitchen, your workplace, your car. When the Holy Spirit opens our eyes, even ordinary objects become parables. If something comes to your heart this week, send me a message. I would love to hear the spiritual insight God shows you.

And as we begin a new week, may the Word guide each step:

โ€œYour word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.โ€ โ€“ Psalm 119:105

Praying that these autumn days will be filled with warm companionshipโ€” walking with the Lord and walking with the Word.

Walking together through the autumn of 2025,

Rev. Gil Lee
