π Autumn Journey #31 β Durian
There is a tropical fruit known as durian, often called βthe king of fruits.β People describe it in very different ways, but the most famous phrase is: βSmell like hell, taste like heaven.β Its aroma can be overwhelming, yet its flavor is rich, creamy, and unforgettable. Some people love it and compare it to custard cake. Others run away as if they smelled something rotten. I once bought a durian in Singapore because everyone said it was famous, but I tried to return it because I thought it had gone badβonly to learn, βThatβs just how it smells!β
In English, we have the expression βbittersweet.β In Korean, we say βλ¨μ§ [Danjjan],β meaning sweet and salty at the same time. These phrases exist because two contrasting flavors can show up together in surprising ways. And perhaps that is why they feel so true to lifeβbecause our lives never carry just one flavor. They hold dozens, hundreds, even thousands of different tastes woven together.
Scripture works the same way. It is not always sweet like honey. Wise people are those who do not expect the Bible to give only comforting, peaceful, and gentle messages. Paul encouraged Timothy to read Scripture with the right expectationβunderstanding that Godβs Word teaches, rebukes, corrects, and trains in righteousness. Grace sometimes comes through comfort, and sometimes through correction. Through that full range, we grow into mature people of God, equipped for every good work.
βAll Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.β (2 Timothy 3:16β17)
Before coming to the United States, I thought ice cream had only thirty-one flavors. But living here, I discovered there are far moreβeach one unique and delightful in its own way. In the same way, my hope and prayer for our Greenland family is that we learn to savor the many βflavorsβ of life and the many βflavorsβ of Godβs Word. May we enjoy every season God gives, with openness, curiosity, and joy.
May you taste the fullness of what God is doing in your life todayβboth the sweet and the challengingβand discover His goodness in it all.
