When I think of suffering, several passages come to mind:
[James 1:2–4]
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
[Romans 5:3–4]
3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
[Hebrews 6:19]
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.
Suffering, trials, or—if we unpack it further—the difficult events, accidents, or even people in our lives who cause us pain, are in fact God’s hands at work, shaping us to be “mature and complete, not lacking anything.” When we view them this way, suffering ceases to be suffering. Affliction ceases to be affliction. Instead, they become a part of God’s process of shaping us—and in that realization, we find strength and wisdom to endure.
Moreover, because Jesus walked the road of suffering, when we too walk such paths, we follow in His footsteps. That gives meaning and worth to our pain. Anything in life that holds true meaning and value is worth the cost—and so, we find the courage to continue.
The Israelites’ journey wasn’t a smooth road either. It was difficult and burdensome, and they grumbled as they walked it. Yet every path that gives deep meaning and value to life is rarely easy. Often, it's filled with struggle, hardship, and even pain. But because it leads to something greater, we find the strength to walk it.
If, through it all, I can be shaped in the hands of the Potter into a holy vessel—set apart for His purpose—then every hardship is worth it.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for giving me the eyes to see and the faith to not fear trials and suffering.
Pour out Your Spirit of grace upon me continually, that through this suffering,
I may become a holy vessel filled with Your power.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
<오늘의 기도>
