π Autumn Journey #23 β Being vs. Doing
In our life of faith, we often find ourselves repeating two questions: βWhat have I done?β and βWho am I?β When trying to prove who we are, we tend to point to what we have done in the past, what we are doing now, or what we are capable of doing in the future. In other words, we often explain who we are through our Doingβthrough our actions, achievements, or capabilities.
However, when it comes to truly explaining who we are, it is not about our Doing but our Being. It is about our thoughts, our character, and our inner nature. Our Being is revealed through the values we cherish, the meanings we hold dear, and the principles that shape our lives. In truth, even without words, others can discern who we are simply by observing what we consider most precious and meaningful in life.
βIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.β β Genesis 1:1
βIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.β β John 1:1
The Bible speaks of βthe beginningβ in two placesβGenesis 1:1 and John 1:1. Both start with the same phrase, βIn the beginning.β Genesis 1:1 tells us about what God did, while John 1:1 reveals who God is. Every time I reflect on these two verses, I sense that, in the order of understanding, John 1:1 comes before Genesis 1:1βbecause only when we know who we are can we know what we are to do. God was the Word; and because He was the Word, He could do the work of creation.
It is the same for us. We must first know who we are (Being) before we can truly know what we are to do (Doing). The Word of God reveals to us who we are. As one popular song says, βThere are too many versions of me inside me.β But through the eternal and unchanging Word of God, may we rediscover the divine intention and meaning behind our creationβso that we may live out Godβs purpose and fulfill the highest value of the life He designed for us.
