🍁 Autumn Journey #24 – The Beauty of Space

In Eastern art, there is a well-known idea called β€œthe beauty of space.” It refers to the beauty found not only in the areas filled with color and brushstrokes, but also in the places left empty. The empty space carries its own meaning. While the painted parts speak with images and color, the unpainted space also speaksβ€”quietly, deeply, and powerfully.

We use a similar expression when we read: β€œread between the lines.” The letters, words, and sentences give meaning, but the spaces in between also speak. They help us understand the writer’s thoughts, emotions, and deeper intention. What is not written can sometimes say more than what is written.

In Scripture, God sometimes spoke clearly and directly. But there were also moments when God was silent. Because of that silence, people cried out with frustration and longing. David, Habakkuk, and Job all experienced this silence and asked why God would not answer.

β€œHow long, LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)

β€œHow long, LORD, must I call for help, but You do not listen? I cry out to You, β€˜Violence!’ but You do not save.” (Habakkuk 1:2)

β€œI cry out to You, but You do not answer; I stand up, but You only look at me.” (Job 30:20)

Yet even in silence, God was present and working. Sometimes we need God’s words, but sometimes we need His silence. In that silence, God deepened faith, trust, and understanding. His silence became a different kind of message.

In our daily lives, we often feel pressure to fill every momentβ€”to stay busy and productive. But our souls also need space. We need areas in our lives that are intentionally left empty. These spaces are not wasted. They are places where God can work. What looks like β€œempty space” to us becomes spiritual space where God moves in His time and His way.

May we learn to create this spiritual space in our hearts and schedules, trusting that God will fill it with His presence and His work. And as we walk day by day, may we wait with hope, expecting God to speakβ€”even through silence.
