๐Ÿ Autumn Journey Letter #10 โ€“ โ€œCoffee Spirituality"

Dear Walking Together in Autumn family, Today is Fridayโ€”the last day of the week. Youโ€™ve worked hard and lived faithfully through these days, and I bless you in the name of the Lord who delights in your faithfulness.

โ˜• Coffee Spirituality

Every morning, I brew my own coffee by hand. When guests visit and see me grinding the beans and slowly pouring hot water, they often ask, โ€œHow do you have the patience to do all that every morning?โ€ But thereโ€™s a reason I take the time to brew coffee this way, and today Iโ€™d like to share that story with you.

When I begin my day, the first thing I do is boil water. Among all the steps in brewing coffee, it is the one that takes the longest. This first step reminds me of waiting for the presence of the Holy Spirit. The boiling water symbolizes the fire and grace of the Spirit that will soon be poured over my life.

โ€œSee, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.โ€(Isaiah 43:19)

While waiting for the water to boil, I prepare the filter and the server, and then grind the coffee beans. This process reminds me of the spiritual discipline of grinding down my egoโ€”the self that still wants to be in control of my life. Just as the coffee beans are crushed into fine powder, I too am being broken and humbled before God.

โ€œIn your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to deathโ€”even death on a cross!โ€(Philippians 2:5โ€“8)

Next, I place the ground coffeeโ€”symbolizing my broken and humbled selfโ€”into the filter, and slowly pour the hot water, drop by drop. The hot water represents the fire of the Spirit, soaking and passing through every part of my being. As the water filters through the coffee grounds, it becomes a fragrant, drinkable coffee. In the same way, the Spiritโ€™s grace flows through my life, producing a fragrance of grace and a life of blessing.

โ€œFor we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.โ€(2 Corinthians 2:15)

Eventually, the brewed coffee begins to drip into the server below. It is no longer just ground beansโ€”it has become something new, transformed by heat, water, and time. In the same way, I am no longer my old self, but a vessel through which the Word and Spirit of God flow, spreading the fragrance of Christ to those around me. May my life today be such a letter from Godโ€”one that comforts and blesses those who read it.

โ€œYou show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.โ€(2 Corinthians 3:3)

Dear Walking Together in Autumn family, Just as it takes time, heat, breaking, and patience to brew a cup of coffee, our faith too matures through waiting, refining, and surrender. May you quietly sense the gentle hands of God who is shaping your life into a beautiful fragrance of His grace today.

With blessings,

Rev. Gil Lee
