One of the marks of a mature spiritual life is having a wide and generous heart.
A classic illustration contrasts the effect of throwing a stone into a small pond versus the ocean: in a small pond, ripples are immediate and intense; in the vast sea, there is hardly a noticeable response. Likewise, a small pot of water boils quickly, but it takes time for a large pot to heat.
Mature and deep spirituality does not react impulsively. Why? Because it has the depth and capacity to understand both oneself and others with grace.
The key to such spiritual maturity is being filled with the heart of Jesus. More than simply being filled, our hearts and spirits must expand—to hold the fullness of Christ's love and depth.
At first, our small hearts may struggle to contain His vastness. But as we receive and receive again, our spirits stretch, deepen, and grow. I long to become a person whose heart and spirit are as wide and deep as the ocean.
“As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.” —2 Corinthians 6:13 (NIV)
The apostle Paul urges us to widen our hearts as an act of gratitude. As we return the grace, joy, and peace we have received from God, we can expand our hearts and spirits.
By thinking less of ourselves and more of others each day, we grow into wide and deep people. May we live in this grace, daily becoming broader in love and deeper in compassion.
Lord, I long to be a person whose heart is as wide and deep as the ocean.
Let Your Word stretch and deepen my narrow spirit.
May I grow each day to become more like Jesus—broad in love and deep in grace.

성숙한 영성을 가진 사람의 특징중의 하나는 <넓은 마음> 이다. 넓은 마음과 좁은 마음에 대한 가장 좋은 예화는 "옹달샘에 돌을 던지면 쉽게 파장이 일지만, 넓은 바다에 돌을 던지면 거의 파장이 잃어나지 않는다"는 이야기다. 또한 "작은 그릇에 물을 끓이면 쉽게 끓지만 큰 그릇에 물을 담아 끊이면 시간이 걸린다"는 이야기이다. 성숙하고 깊은 영성은 쉽게 반응하지 않는다는 특징이 있다. 그만큼 넓고 깊기 때문에 자신과 다른 사람을 충분히 이해할 만한 마음과 영성을 소유했기 때문이다.
이렇게 넓고 깊고 성숙한 영성을 갖는 비결은 예수님의 마음으로 나를 충만케 하는 것이다. 아니 충만하게 할 뿐만 아니라 오히려 내 마음과 영성을 넓혀야 한다. 나의 좁은 마음과 영성에 예수님의 크고 깊은 영성을 처음에는 담기 어려울 수 있지만, 담고 또 담고 그리고 또 담으면 지속적으로 확장되고, 깊어지고, 넓어질 것을 믿는다. 그렇게 드넓고 깊은 바다처럼 마음과 영성이 넓고 깊은 사람이 되고 싶다.
[고린도후서 6:13] 내가 자녀에게 말하듯 하노니 보답하는 것으로 너희도 마음을 넓히라
바울은 보답하는 마음으로 마음을 넓히라고 권면한다. 받은 은혜를 보답하며 마음을 넓힐 것을 권면한다. 내가 받은 하나님의 은혜, 기쁨, 평안을 다른 사람들에게 나누며 마음과 영성을 넓힐 수 있다. 내 자신만을 생각하기 보단 다른 사람들을 더 많이 생각함으로 넓고 깊은 사람이 될 수 있다는 말이다. 매일 매일 다른 사람을 생각하며 깊어지고 넓어지는 은혜를 누릴 수 있기를 소망한다.

하나님, 넓고 깊은 바다처럼 넓고 깊은 사람이 되길 원합니다. 하나님의 말씀으로 나의 좁고 얕은 마음을 예수님을 닮아 매일 매일 깊어지고 넓어지는 삶이 되게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
