Autumn Journey - Day 37.

🍁 Autumn Journey #37

Oh dear, Autumn Journey family— I completely thought I had already sent today’s Autumn Journey Letter, only to realize just now that I didn’t. My apologies! And thank you to those who kindly checked in and reminded me. I truly appreciate you!

“They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses and said, ‘Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!’” (Numbers 21:4–5)

Today I was reminded of the Israelites who complained about the daily bread they received. Whether it’s food, objects, or even people—once we get used to them, we tend to take them lightly. This is part of our human nature. Air, sunlight, wind, water—things essential for life—are easily forgotten. Daily meals, ordinary drinks, simple conveniences—all can become “nothing special.” Even in relationships, we often see how the warmth toward family and close friends fades as familiarity grows.

The same pattern appears in the relationship between Israel and God. The desperate gratitude they once felt is gone. What was once miraculous—manna and quail—is now called “miserable food.” Their hearts had grown cold to the point of saying, “We detest it.” In their words, we see how little they understood God’s heart.

Their daily life had become ordinary. Breathing, eating, resting—simple gifts they received each day no longer stirred gratitude. When small thanksgiving disappears, the heart quickly turns to complaint; complaint grows into grumbling, and grumbling becomes full-blown resentment.

There is a saying: “Do not overlook even the smallest spark.” Likewise, we must watch for the small ways our hearts begin to take things for granted. A heart filled with dissatisfaction often starts with a neglected gratitude.

So let us not lose the sense of wonder toward the Scripture we read each day. When we can cherish small things well, we can also hold onto greater things faithfully. And in doing so, we learn to walk joyfully with God—today and forever.

May you discover the small, often unnoticed gifts in your ordinary day, and may your heart be filled with gratitude as you walk with Him.

Walking together through the autumn of 2025,

Rev. Gil Lee
