Shepherding refers to caring for sheep. Sheep are characterized by their lack of direction, poor hearing, weak eyesight, stubbornness, tendency to flock together, and their gentle and obedient nature. They often don't know where to go, can't see or hear clearly, stubbornly insist on their own ways, and gather in groups without much understanding—thus requiring significant care and guidance.
[Isaiah 53:6, NIV] We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
When we look closely at ourselves as God's people, we see striking similarities. Often, we do not listen carefully to God's Word, lack clarity about where we should go, stubbornly rely on our experiences and knowledge, and prefer grouping with those who think similarly.
This highlights our need for a shepherd. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, guides our paths so that we may walk in goodness and eternity.
[John 10:11, NIV] "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
In the Bible, when God appointed leaders for the people of Israel, He often chose shepherds—Moses and David are prime examples. David was described as being "taken from the sheep pens," and Moses was called while "tending sheep" on Mount Horeb.
[Psalms 78:70-71, NIV]
70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;
71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.
[Exodus 3:1, NIV] Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
Why shepherds? Because God's work isn't primarily about running organizations or accomplishing great mission projects—it's fundamentally about caring for sheep. Even when we undertake projects or organize structures, they must ultimately serve the purpose of caring for each individual sheep. God consistently chose shepherds to lead His people because His priority has always been shepherding.
May we all embrace a shepherd’s heart, lovingly caring for those around us, and become shepherds greatly used by God for His kingdom.
<목양>
