Wow! We now have only two days left. As we approach the finish line, there is a sense of fulfillment that comes from having journeyed this far with perseverance. Some of you have read every letter of the 2025 Autumn Journey, while others have read them occasionally. Some have written daily reflections, and others—though not every day—have found themselves thinking more about God and reflecting on your relationship with Him. Even if just a little, I hope you were able to sense what it means to walk with God and taste something of that journey.
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6, NIV)
Lately, I find it deeply helpful to think of the Christian life through the lens of a relationship with God. Just as human relationships go through seasons, so does our relationship with God. And just as relationships with people have their ups and downs, our relationship with God also has ups and downs. Simply acknowledging this helps us approach our spiritual lives with more grace and spaciousness.
The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalms 23:1-4, NIV)
In that sense, we can describe the Christian life as companionship. The essence of companionship is this: whether things are good or bad, joyful or sorrowful, we walk together—sharing, understanding, and experiencing life side by side. Someone who walks with you through all the battles and storms of life becomes family. Likewise, the one who walks with you through the spiritual battles—mountaintops and valleys—is what we call God’s family. Without such shared experiences, relationships remain shallow, leading to only shallow growth and maturity.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. (Romans 12:15, NIV)
As various emotions, events, and unexpected moments shape a relationship, the depth of that relationship grows. In the same way, the Christian life is discovering who God is through many different experiences. Without navigating these ups and downs, we can never truly become family with God, nor taste the richness of a deep relationship. This is why encountering divine turning points through God’s Word—moment by moment—is so essential.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (James 1:2-4, NIV)
In an age of individualism—when people avoid inconvenience and seek comfort—we discover through these moments of holy discomfort what God truly desires: a people who become God’s family. Sometimes this means moving closer, little by little, to people who feel uncomfortable, people we might prefer to avoid, or people with whom we’d rather keep a safe distance. This, in many ways, is the evidence of spiritual growth and maturity. My hope and prayer is that our Greenland community will become such a community—a place where people experience deep growth and spiritual maturity.
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:13-14, NIV)
