๐ Walking Together in Autumn #13 โ The Spirituality of Everyday Life
Hello, Walking Together Family!
How are you spending this beautiful autumn of 2025?
Iโm sure many of you are busy โ thereโs always something that needs your attention. Even in the midst of all that busyness, I pray that youโll handle what truly matters with wisdom, and that you wonโt look back later saying, โOh no, I forgot!โ but instead find peace and order in your days.
What are some of the most important things you do every day?
Aside from what you must do to keep up with daily life โ working, caring for family, staying organized โ what fills the spaces in between? Do you find little pockets of rest or moments of refreshment? How do you recharge and stay spiritually awake in your daily rhythm?
Last Saturday, I attended the AWANA Conference, where we reflected on a vital question: โHow can we help our children grow as disciples who resemble Jesus?โ One of the topics that deeply touched me was discipleship in the home โ and more specifically, how to nurture our children as disciples in the midst of everyday life.
Among the many sessions, one of the most memorable activities was this:
Find moments in your daily life when you can talk about God or Scripture with your children.
For example, what could you share about Jesus while waiting in the car for 10โ20 minutes during pickup time, or during the drive to school, or while sitting at the dinner table together?
Many of us truly desire to raise our children in faith, but often we think discipleship must happen in a program or a Bible study that takes an hour or two. The reality is โ life is busy, and such moments are hard to secure. So instead, what if we prepared short but meaningful conversations to naturally bring faith into our everyday interactions โ on the way to school, at the grocery store, or during dinner time?
To do that, we ourselves need a life of short yet deep reflection and prayer. Discipleship doesnโt always require a special curriculum or structured program. It begins with a heart that is spiritually sensitive to Godโs presence in ordinary moments โ a life that can offer brief but weighty questions or stories that point back to Him.
For our beloved grandparents โ if itโs hard to find opportunities to disciple your children, perhaps God is opening new doors through your grandchildren. I encourage you to look for those sacred moments of Grandchildren Ministry, where faith stories can naturally flow between generations.
Most of all, what truly matters is that our hearts carry the stories of Jesus โ stories of our journey with Him, stories that can be shared and lived out in daily life. I pray that as we continue this journey, weโll cultivate a rhythm of short but deep moments of reflection, so that our ordinary days may overflow with conversations that carry spiritual insight and grace.
โThese commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.โ (Deuteronomy 6:6โ9)
As I picture the autumn leaves along our New England paths, Iโm reminded that true discipleship grows not only in the big moments, but in the gentle rhythm of everyday faithfulness.
Grace and peace to you on your journey,
Rev. Gil Lee
