🍁 Walking Together in Autumn #12 - "The Spirituality of Doing the Dishes"
Today, I want to share something I’ve learned through one of the most ordinary parts of daily life — doing the dishes. Through this simple act, I’ve come to experience a deeper spirituality — a renewed relationship with God. I hope this reflection helps you also discover God’s presence in your own everyday moments.
One morning, as soon as I opened my eyes, I saw the kitchen sink piled high with dishes from the night before. After a short hesitation, I decided to wash them one by one. When I finished and looked at the clean kitchen, a sense of satisfaction filled my heart. A few moments later, my wife came in and exclaimed, “Wow, this looks amazing!” Her unexpected joy made me smile too. That morning, I deeply understood the meaning of the famous saying, “Happy wife, happy life.” But even more, I gained a profound insight: When we do even the most ordinary things as unto the Lord, we can experience spiritual joy.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
The first thing I noticed when washing dishes was the leftover food — things that once brought joy and satisfaction, now spoiled and unpleasant. Why did that happen? Because they had already served their purpose. They could no longer be used — they needed to be thrown away.
Then I realized there were “leftovers” in my heart as well — old wounds, bad habits, stubborn pride, and unnecessary desires. Unless I let go of these things and cleanse my heart, there is no room for new grace to fill me.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
But then came the tough part — dishes that wouldn’t come clean easily. The greasy pans and stubborn stains reminded me of my own heart — the parts that resist change, the sins that cling tightly. Even after scrubbing with a sponge, some stains required a steel pad and more soap. Watching the grime finally come off, I realized: repentance isn’t a one-time act; it’s a daily discipline. My heart, too, needs to be cleansed over and over again.
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10
From that day on, doing the dishes was no longer just a household task — it became a holy ritual. Each time I wiped away dirt, I also remembered the impurities of my heart, and it became a moment of cleansing before God. The process of washing with water and soap reminded me of being washed by the water of the Holy Spirit. Even when I didn’t feel like doing it, I sensed God’s gentle hand softening and shaping my heart through it.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9–10
Through this, I’ve learned once again that what matters most is not the size of what we do, but the heart behind it. Living Coram Deo means doing everything before the face of God — seeing with His eyes, feeling with His heart, and moving as His hands and feet.
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31
Today, may you hear God’s voice even in the smallest tasks. May your ordinary moments — your washing, cleaning, cooking, driving — become moments of worship. Even in something as simple as doing the dishes, may you meet the living God in Spirit and in Truth.
“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” — John 4:23–24
Lord, cleanse not only my hands but also my heart. In every small act of service, help me to meet You there. May my daily life become worship — pure, joyful, and pleasing to You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
