Day 2.
Day 2 — We Are Not an Accident
"This is what the Lord says — he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you." — Isaiah 44:2
The confession that "there are no accidents in this world" is a truth I came to understand through my son Moses, who shared just twenty days of life with me on this earth. If I had not learned through Moses in 2002 the profound value of a single soul, I would never have come to know the true essence of pastoral ministry — nor would I have experienced the deep joy that comes through it. And so, even when something feels deeply uncomfortable, sorrowful, or painful, the conviction that it is working for my good has come to me more and more readily with each passing year.
I have also come to understand why Jesus said, "It is for your good that I am going away." For if Jesus had not departed, the Holy Spirit would not have come to us (John 16:7). It is precisely because the disciples went through the grief of losing Jesus that we today are able to live with the Spirit in joy.
There may be some among you who still find it difficult to agree that "we are not an accident" or that "there are no coincidences in this world." Even so, my hope and prayer is that you would look a little deeper, a little wider, a little further — and walk this earth with faith, with faithfulness, and with a heart at rest.
Lord, if any of our Lenten Journey companions today are shaken, discouraged, or weary in heart — hold them tightly in Your deep, vast, and boundless love. May Your comfort and peace wash over them as grace. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
